Surveys and Polls are tools that can be adapted to a huge variety of roles to use within the classroom. Having iPads in the hands of your students means that they can give instant responses quickly and efficiently to:

  • Check levels of understanding  at each step of the learning process
  • Create simple quizes to test for skill and knowledge mastery in subjects like maths and science
  • Collect data for analysis
  • Discover different perspectives on an issue

Socrative.

This is one of the best. Set up your survey in your own “classroom” and once students have the access number and students have the student “clicker” app of their iPads ….as the iTunes blurb says it bring ….” student response and ease of use to a whole new level.  Be engaged for the entire class with educational exercises and games.  See all your classmates’ ideas in real-time and interact with the responses.  Provide your instructor feedback on the lessons and how well you understand the material.  Ask your own poll questions for the entire class or build a premade activity for your whole class.  Have Fun!

Here is a tutorial on how to add images to your Socrative

If you  are looking for a very simple polling tool then this could be the one for you. It is free and there is no need to join up to anything. Once you have downloaded the app just click to start a new question. You can share out the link (or embed it in a blog) or students can simple search for any “gardens” in their local area. Then simply slick in the response box and they have either 20 or 40 characters with which to respond. (You can set all this in Settings) But what I LOVE is that the responses create a word cloud. A great way to synthesise results!

TodaysMeetToday’s Meet

While technically not an app, this  lovely, simple, free web tool works beautifully on an iPad. It enables you to create an in class conversation a bit like a Twitter Feed that you would see at a conference. It allows for feedback and conversation in real time in a safe environment. There are no passwords, all you have to do is set up a “room” and “meet” with your students. Encourage your students to ask questions, make comments, give opinions or feedback. A great way to know about the learning and thinking of your students.
