iPads in Education – Enhancing student learning by Lynda Cutting

DRAWING

Doodle Buddy

A simple drawing tool but so much potential, perfect for so many purposes and it’s free. It has a very useful stamp pad, the background can be changed or you could down load your own image. Screen capture enables work to be kept and presented.

What can you do with it?

  • Practice letters or numbers
  • Use the stamp function to represent numbers, groups etc
  • Students could take a photo of their work and annotate it
    • Automatic response to spelling Practice High Frequency words or number facts
    • Read the word or question and students respond in a favourite colour
    • Make number sentences for addition or subtraction
    • Use the stamps to create pictographs
    • Use the stamps to reproduce simple patterns created by the teacher. Or maximise the “mobile” nature of the iPad by having one student make a pattern then passing the iPad to a partner to reproduce it.

Drawing Box Free is a lovely simple drawing app. It has more features than Doodle Buddy but still easy enough to be used by students of all ages

WowPaint is a really interesting drawing app. More complex than Drawing Box and Doodle Buddy but still pretty simple to use. For me, what gives it the WOW factor is that with a stylus it would be a very effective and simple mind mapping tool or even to create the sort of infopics that you sometimes see on TEDTalks.

Glow Draw

Glow Draw is also a free app and very similar to Doodle Buddy. A little less flexible but students will love the fluro colour.

 Art of Glow

A great drawing tool, also similar to Doodle Buddy except that it records your movements as you draw and replays in a loop. The controls allow a great deal of flexibility too.

What can you do with it?

Letter and number formation: With settings like this it is a great way to develop letter formations as you can clearly see the starting point for each letter and how it was constructed.

Type Drawing $1.99

This is really amazing. Decide on your text then use this string on words to create a picture. You can control the colour, font, size etc. Layer upon layer – create a picture with a difference.

This is a beautiful and sophisticated drawing app. It features a huge range of colours and students can choose to use a  pencil, brush, crayon, or bucket. Best of all they can continue working on a piece – returning as often as they wish and there is a ranged of textures and backgrounds.
